Get advice on the right controls
A driving assessment can help identify appropriate controls and teaching arrangements. A list of adapted vehicles does not determine which adaptation is right for an individual.
Contact a Driving Mobility centre or a suitably qualified specialist to discuss the assessment and any referral requirements.
Match the instructor and the vehicle
Ask whether the instructor teaches in the required adaptation, which vehicle is used and where lessons can begin. Availability of an automatic car does not establish availability of hand controls or other adaptations.
Check how training, practice and test-day car use will work together. Discuss the licence codes and vehicle requirements through the official licensing service.
Check conditional financial support
The Motability Foundation lesson grant has specific scheme and benefit conditions. Other funds may depend on age, location or an individual support plan. Use the funding finder to identify a route, then confirm eligibility with the funder.
