A trainee licence is a specific regulated route

It is not a general permission to work independently while learning. Check the current eligibility, training, sponsorship and permitted-duration rules with DVSA or DVA.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland have different arrangements. Do not apply GB supervision choices or trainee-licence limits to NI without checking the NI source.

Make supervision practical

Before choosing a sponsor, ask who will supervise or provide additional training, how it will fit around paid lessons and what it costs. Keep the required evidence in the form the regulator specifies.

Advertising must accurately state trainee status and comply with the applicable rules. A provider profile must not imply full ADI qualification merely because a school employs or sponsors the person.

Plan for the end of the licence

Check what happens if qualification takes longer, an attempt is unsuccessful or the sponsor relationship changes. Model these possibilities in the budget before relying on trainee earnings.
